com Vehicle Details:
According to the PHS documents, this is a real 1965 GTO.
What makes it very rare is that this GTO is a Coupe (post car) and not a hardtop.
PHS states that in 1965, Pontiac produced 55,722 GTO hardtops, 11,311 GTO convertibles, and only 8,319 GTO coupes (post cars).
Again, according to the PHS papers and the cowl trim tag, this car was originally Bluemist Slate with black interior and left the factory with a 4v 389 WT 335 hp engine, a manual 3 speed manual transmission, center console, Safe-T-Track rear axle, and air condition (plus other accessories - see PHS and tag).
At some point in history (unknown when), the car was upgraded to the Tri-Power, Muncie 4-Speed manual transmission, and power 4-wheel disk brakes.
When I purchased the car, there was a packet of Ace Wilson - Royal Pontiac papers in the glove box.
See video.
I found the original owner of these papers, and he remembers buying a brand new GTO, and he remembers these papers.
But after describing this car to him, he doesn't think this car was his.
It remains a mystery on how/why his papers (and Bobcat window stickers) ended up in this Tri-power 4-Speed GTO.
This car was obviously upgraded from a 4v 3-speed car to a tri-power 4-speed car.
Did the parts come from Ace Wilson Royal Pontiac? No way to know for sure.
If so, would that qualify it as an Ace Wilson Bobcat? Do your own research and decide for yourself.
I am not able to verify one way or another.
But, the papers go with the car and the topic is an interesting story to share at car shows, cruise in's, etc.
Arizona VIN Tag - See video The car comes with print-out scans of several previous car titles.
These titles go back many years, including Arizona and California.
I suspect (but can not verify) that the car was probably restored in Arizona.
I have talked on the phone with a previous owner from Missouri, who said he purchased the car already restored, from a guy in Arizona.
You might notice the car has an Arizona issued VIN tag.
The VIN on the current Arizona VIN tag matches all the documents that I can find, including previous titles and the current title.
And, it also matches the PHS documents.
So I assume, (but can not verify) that the original VIN tag might have gotten damaged during the restoration in Arizona, and Arizona issued a replacement tag.
This is just my theory, and I am just speculating.
If this VIN tag is an issue for you, I suggest you contact your local DMV.
